After Life - 16 January 2010 to 20 March 2010
Where did the tradition of wearing black clothing to a funeral originate? What impact did the World Wars have on funerary tradition? Why are bodies taken out of houses in coffins feet first? These questions and many more will be answered in a new temporary exhibition opening in Callendar House on the 16th January, which takes a serious look at the subject of death, and particularly at how the living deal with death.

Focusing on the customs, rituals and traditions that have been used through the ages to mark the passing of life, the exhibition will include mourning costume and jewellery, a death mask and a modern wicker coffin amongst the items on display, alongside objects loaned from Fife Libraries and Museums Service and West Lothian Museum Service.

Geoff Bailey will open the supporting events programme with a talk on local graveyards and gravestones, and in March the team at the Falkirk Crematorium will conduct exclusive tours of the facility giving an insight into how operations are managed to ensure the dead and the bereaved are treated with dignity and respect. Further supporting events include a weekend of films exploring some of the themes in After Life at the Hippodrome on the 21st and 22nd March, and The Memorandum Series with artist Melanie Sims, at the Park Gallery, which focuses on memory, mortality and our place in the natural world, and also opens on the 16th January.

After Life runs in the Large Gallery, Callendar House from 16th January – 20th March 2010 Admission to Callendar House and the exhibition is free. Advance booking for the talk and tours is highly recommended.
