Historic Scotland Walks on the Wild Side - 01 February 2008 to 31 December 2008
Guided tours lead by Historic Scotland’s expert guides are back by popular demand. The Orkney World Heritage Site Ranger Service are offering free guided walks around the Ring of Brodgar, a stunning circle of upright standing stones dating to the Neolithic period, situated just five miles north-east of Stenness. In 2007 nearly 1,700 visitors enjoyed tours from our Rangers Sandra Miller and Elaine Clarke, compared with 1,200 in 2006, and this year people of all ages will have the opportunity to attend walks every Thursday at 13.00. On the tour visitors will have the chance to uncover the history behind the people who created the Ring of Brodgar, the reasons for its creation and what it was used for. Sandra Miller, Ranger at Historic Scotland, said; ‘Visiting the Ring of Brodgar is a quite a special experience: the history of the site and its surroundings give it real atmosphere and the stories behind it really bring it to life. It’s been so rewarding to see the growing popularity of our guided walks and we are looking forward to welcoming more people in 2008.’ No advance booking is required for these guided tours, although visitors are advised to wear appropriate outdoor clothing. There are guided walks every Thursday February to May, September to December, and every day during June, July and August.

SCOTTISH LEGENDS COME TOGETHER AT STIRLING CASTLE - Today to 11 May 2008
Historic Scotland announce a brand-new event to take place at one of Scotland’s most popular visitor attractions, Stirling Castle. Taking place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May Legends brings together some of Scotland’s most famous celebrities from history, spanning different centuries and various iconic moments in time. Visitors will have the chance to hear the stories of Robert the Bruce, see William Wallace in action and even have their picture taken with Mary Queen of Scots. There will be a special area where children will be able to try out replica outfits from the past for free. A special parade will bring each day to a close and the whole cast will pose for photos. Gillian MacDonald, Manager at Stirling Castle, said; “Legends promises to be a great day out for the whole family. The event covers 2,000 years of history in one day, with historic VIPs including Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Marquis of Montrose and even Robert Burns. Bringing together so many icons from history means there is something for everyone, no matter what their favourite time in history may be. This will truly be a legendary experience.” Stirling Castle itself is legendary: situated high on a volcanic outcrop the castle’s long turbulent history is associated with great figures from Scotland’s past such as William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots. It has seen many royal dramas and witnessed the lives and deaths of almost every Scottish monarch up to the Union of the Crowns in 1603. Legends will take place at Stirling Castle on 10 and 11 May from 12noon to 16.00 each day. This event is included in the admission price to the castle.

Covenanters Prepare to Clash Swords at Edzell - 17 May 2008 to 18 May 2008
| The serene Edzell Castle and Garden is one of the most refined castles in Scotland, but on 17 and 18 May it will be transformed to face a turbulent time of civil war and unrest at Soldiers for the Covenant. Visitors to the castle will be transported back to the 17th century to find out all about the Covenant. Members of Fraser’s Dragoons, the most northerly regiment of the Civil War Society - The Sealed Knot - are back at Edzell Castle by popular demand and they will re-enact the preparations made by the Covenanters to defend the country against Cromwell’s invading army. Visitors will have the chance to see soldiers demonstrating their skills with swords, muskets and pikes; they will be surrounded by the boom of cannons, the crack of musketry and the clash of swords. There will be an opportunity to wander round the soldiers’ camp where they will meet the camp surgeon, the minister and discover how musket balls are made. Clara Wheelan, Historic Scotland Events Officer, said; “Last year’s event at Edzell Castle was very popular with over 400 visitors enjoying the civil war re-enactment weekend. This year’s event promises to be even better as the costumed performers really bring this era of Scottish history to life. And with such a fantastic setting it really is well worth the visit.” Soldiers for the Covenant is on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May, from 12noon to 16.00 each day.
