Brass Rubbing in a 15th Century Church

Unleash the artist inside you and your family and head for the Brass Rubbing Centre tucked away in Chalmers Close, just off the Royal Mile (opposite the Museum of Childhood).

There's an array of brasses to choose from, so every member of the family should be able to find something which appeals: Celtic designs, medieval knights and roaring lions are waiting for you in this former Gothic Trinity Church. And if you're new to this activity our friendly staff will help to get you started.

Located in the Trinity Apse, this is the sole surviving fragment of the 15th century Trinity College Church and Hospital. Founded by Mary of Gueldres following the death of her husband King James II at the siege of Roxburgh in 1460, there's something here for history buffs as well as art historians.

The original Trinity Church was demolished in the 1840s to make way for Waverley Railway Station but in the 1870s the Apse was rebuilt on its current site from original stones.

Opening Hours
Monday-Saturday 10am–5pm (April to September)
Sundays 12 noon-5pm (during August only)
(Last rubbing by 4pm).

Prices: Entry is free and rubbings start from £1.50

MEET THE ANCESTORS - 05 April 2009 to 31 October 2009
Three generations of Cellardyke fishermen return to their home port in large-scale portraits by their descendant Alan Watson. You can see these striking images of Star Elick, James and George Doig Watson in the Scottish Fisheries Museum, and delve into the history of a local fisher family.

Ancestral Triptych

by Alan Watson
I come from a long line of fisher folk who have lived and worked in the close knit coastal villages which make up the East Neuk of Fife. My fishing heritage has always been very important to me and has appeared as a recurring theme in my artwork over many years.

This group of family fishing portraits formed the centrepiece of an exhibition of paintings and charcoal drawings I held in the 369 Gallery in Edinburgh in 1986. This show subsequently toured Scotland culminating in Ancestral Triptych being included in the first official British art exhibition to be held in the Soviet Union since the revolution.

The earliest record I have of my family in Cellardyke is James Watson who was born c 1670. William Alexander Watson born 1767 is believed to be the first skipper to have a boat registered ‘Morning Star’. The nickname ‘Star’ then follows my paternal family line distinguishing them from other Watson fishing families in the East Neuk.

The term triptych is used to describe an arrangement of three paintings which are designed to hang together. The centre panel is usually twice as wide as the hinged side panels which can be closed as wings to shutter the central image. This type of painting became very popular in the Middle Ages and variations of it are still used by artists today.

40 Years Of The Scottish Fisheries Museum - 04 July 2009 to 27 September 2009
As part of a series of events and exhibitions designed to celebrate the Museum’s anniversary year we will be holding an exhibition (to open on the 4th of July, the actual anniversary of the museum’s opening) of the Museum’s development over the last 40 years.

From the earliest recorded history of Anstruther, fishing was the mainstay of the town. At one time, more fish were caught, processed and traded here than at any other harbour in Scotland. The fishing industry also supported many associated trades, and was responsible for a large percentage of trade in its own right. Cured fish were exported to other parts of Scotland, to England, and abroad to Europe.

The exhibition includes many photographs and memorabilia charting the Museum’s history so far and is sure to evoke memories for the many people who have been involved in one way or another over the years. Also on show are some of the stars of the collections, including some of the very first pieces that were donated, and also some of the curiosities such as a murder weapon and a model Chinese junk that have found their way into the Museum.

The exhibition, entitled SFM @ 40, will run from 4 July until 27 September during our usual opening hours (Mon – Sat: 10-5.30, Sun 11-5).

LINLITHGOW - A PALACE FIT FOR A QUEEN - 04 July 2009 to 21 August 2009
If Mary Queen of Scots is one of the heroines of history whom you’d most like to meet, then here’s your opportunity.

Join us at Linlithgow Palace for A Queen’s Progress and you’ll not only have a chance to meet the monarch, but also be able to find out how this magnificent royal residence would have prepared for a regal visit by Mary and her entourage.

On Saturday 4th and Wednesday 22nd July and Saturday 8th and Friday 21st August, visitors to the splendid Renaissance ruins of Linlithgow Palace are invited to meet living history performers who aim to bring to life the ways in which this majestic property and favoured Stewart seat would have readied itself for the arrival and stay of Mary Queen of Scots and her party.

What did the courtiers, servants and guards have to do to make sure everything was perfect long before the Queen arrived? The event explores the different aspects of courtly life and looks at how the Palace building was specifically designed to meet the needs of Mary and other royal personages and their guests. And visitors will find out all about the extent of the complex - and costly - preparations for a monarch’s visit and residence.

The kitchens had to prepare for sumptuous feasting fit for a queen - sourcing an endless range of supplies and ingredients designed to impress - and cooking, roasting, baking and making ale to cater for the discerning and cosmopolitan royal party. The servants also had to get the royal apartments ready, setting up suitably impressive furniture and hangings, and ensuring everything was scrupulously clean and comfortable. And the guards had to check the property’s defenses, ensuring the safety of the queen and check that there were no dangers to her security.

A Queen’s Progress takes place on all of the dates listed above from 10.30am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 3.30pm and is included in normal admission price to Linlithgow Palace (Adult £5.20, Concession £4.20 and Child £2.60).

TALES OF REFORMATION AND REVENGE AT ABERDOUR - 05 July 2009 to 05 July 2009
The 12th-century stronghold of Aberdour Castle will provide a dramatic backdrop on Sunday 5 July for a captivating re-telling of the story of the political intrigue and mystery surrounding the murder of David Rizzio, private secretary to Mary Queen of Scots.

Step back in time to 1566 to meet one of the most important members of the Red Douglases – James Douglas, the 4th Earl of Morton – and hear his account of the riveting tale and his role in it.

Nick Finnigan, Historic Scotland Events Manager, said: “Rizzio's murder was a key point in a campaign by Protestant Scottish nobles and Elizabeth I to destabilise Mary Queen of Scots, whose popularity and policies threatened their preferred status quo.

“The violent murder of Rizzio - whom it was rumoured, had become too close to Mary, may have had an adulterous affair with her, and even fathered her child - was a truly shocking event. Rizzio was repeatedly stabbed in front of the heavily-pregnant young queen. His murder was the catalyst for the downfall of Mary’s husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley - who was said to have taken part in the murderous conspiracy, spurred by jealousy and seeking revenge. And it had serious consequences for Mary.

“She was forced to abdicate the following year to the Red Douglas, the 4th Earl of Morton, so who better to tell this incredible tale than he? And Aberdour Castle is a perfect setting for him to share his fascinating memories – it was a Douglas residence.”

In addition to hearing the Earl’s account of the plot to overthrow Mary Queen of Scots in The Red Douglas – Reformation and Revenge on 5th July, visitors will be able to watch 16th-century soldiers practicing their weaponry skills, see the power of the mighty warbow of the time, and hear the roar of muskets and the clash of steel.

The Red Douglas - Reformation and Revenge takes place from noon to 4pm and is included in normal admission price to Aberdour Castle (Adult £4.20, Concession £3.20 and Child £2.10).

KNIGHTS TO CLASH IN LINLITHGOW JOUST - 11 July 2009 to 12 July 2009
Knights in armour will be mounting their steeds and reaching for their lances for a spectacular summer joust at Linlithgow Palace. The medieval clash takes place on the weekend of 11 and 12 July, against one of Scotland’s most beautiful historic backdrops. As the knights charge into the fray they will be accompanied by a dramatic soundtrack.

Linlithgow Palace was a favourite residence of the Stewart kings and queens, the lands around it and the loch were their playground.

But you don’t have to be royalty to enjoy this summer’s display of skill and daring.

Nick Finnigan, Historic Scotland events and filming manager, said: “Linlithgow Palace used to be the preserve of the royal family and their special guests.

“But this spectacular show is open for everyone to enjoy, and will offer lots of entertainment for all the family. We have had a fantastic membership offer available which offers 6 months free, which includes free entry to this event and lots of other solutions for the summer holidays.”

The afternoon will be packed with excitement from the first fanfare, which announces the knights’ arrival in the arena, to the crunch moment when the tournament champion is decided. In addition to the jousting there will be combat displays, archery, falconry and a living history encampment.

Visitors can also enjoy the palace itself, where there will be costumed performers taking on the roles of rival medieval lords. The event takes place from 12.30pm to 4.30pm both days and is part of Historic Scotland’s nationwide programme in support of the 2009 Year of Homecoming.
