National Mining Museum Scotland

This 5 star attraction is set in the wonderfully restored Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongrange, just 5 minutes from the Edinburgh City by-pass. Here, visitors can retrace the footsteps of thousands of miners and their families who relied on the colliery to make a living.

There are two major exhibitions: “The Story of Coal” and “A Race Apart”. Using interactive displays, reconstructions, sounds and visuals, visitors can find out exactly what life was like, at work and at home, for the men and their families who toiled so hard.

For the majority of visitors it is almost impossible to imagine the tough conditions and sheer blackness of working in a mine over 500 metres below the ground. The tour of the pithead, recreated underground roadway and coalface, gives the atmosphere and noise of a working pit – an experience which instantly makes you glad you’re not a miner! Our guided tours are led by ex-miner guides so visitors have the added benefit of hearing stories about their experiences in the pits.

For families with small children our brand new Mini Miners Soft Play ticks all the boxes! And for older ones the Mining Mechanics Interactives Zone is a must!
