New Lanark Mills Visitor Centre

Long famous as a beauty spot and for the work of the world-famous mill owner Robert Owen, this unique 18th century cotton mill village has been carefully restored as a living community, and is now an official UNESCO World Heritage Site with an award-winning Visitor Centre and 4 star Hotel. You can explore all the award-winning attractions in the historic village with one passport ticket. Highlights include the sky-high Roof Garden, and the Annie McLeod Experience Ride - a fascinating dark ride in which the ghost of mill-girl Annie returns to where she worked in 1820 and takes you on a mesmerizing journey back in time as she tells her story of life in Robert Owen’s New Lanark. Other attractions include an audio-visual theatre show, restored Millworkers’ House, Robert Owen’s House, 1930s period store, working textile machinery, the Historic Classroom and Saving New Lanark exhibition, as well a new interactive play area for children. Snacks and light meals are available in the Mill Pantry, or the stunning New Lanark Mill Hotel is nearby for something more substantial. There’s plenty of shopping to be done in the Gift Shop . New Lanark is easy to find, and is around an hour’s drive from Edinburgh (A70) and Glasgow (M74/A72). The village is surrounded by native woodlands – now protected as the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve. Here you can enjoy a gentle riverside walk and see the spectacular Corra Linn waterfall, where the Clyde falls over 30 metres to the valley floor. Location: one mile (2km) south of Lanark.
