The Real Mary King's Close

Beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh's deepest secret - a warren of concealed streets where real people lived, worked and died in bygone centuries. Now you can walk through these hidden closes, some of which have never before been open to the public. The Real Mary King's Close presents an historically accurate interpretation of life in Edinburgh from the 16th to the 19th century. Discover the highs and lows of 16th century townhouse living. Meet some of the people who lived here in the 17th century and learn the truth about how the Burgh Council dealt with the plague epidemic of 1644-1645. On your tour you will see one of the best examples of 17th century housing in Scotland, peek inside the 19th century sawmaker's workshop and walk in centuries-old footsteps along Mary King's Close. Keep a look out and you may even catch a glimpse of Mary King herself.
