Craignethan Castle

An exceptional fortress-residence that was overthrown within 50 years of its construction despite its state-of-the-art artillery defences. Built about 1530, it was the brainchild of Sir James Hamilton of Finart, King James V's talented master of works. There is evidence of his many military innovations, including a shooting gallery or caponier. But within a generation it was 'cast doun' by order of the Privy Council.

The surrounding woodland in the deep Nethan gorge is rich with wildflowers and birdlife.
