Dunfermline Palace and Abbey

Admire one of Scotland’s most impressive medieval interiors and most important royal sites, founded as a priory about 1080. Robert the Bruce was buried in the medieval choir, now beneath the parish church of 1821. St Margaret and David I are among the other monarchs interred here. Charles I was born in the palace that grew up alongside the abbey.

Look for grand architecture, elaborate carvings, a painted vault of the 1500s, medieval window glass and displays of sculpture.

The parish church and Abbot House are not managed by Historic Scotland but are open to the public.

Closed for lunch 12.30-1.30pm. Winter: closed Thursday afternoons, all day Friday and Sunday morning. For opening times of the Abbey Church (not in the care of HS) please telephone 01383 739026.
