About us

Would you like to arrive at work and be located next to the beach, with views out over an historic harbour and the world-famous Bass Rock on your doorstep?

The Scottish Seabird Centre is an award-winning, five-star visitor attraction and conservation and education charity, located in the stunning seaside town of North Berwick. We welcome around 280,000 visits a year.

There is the Discovery Centre, offering interactive live cameras on the local islands to see wildlife in its natural habitat, as well as the 3D Wildlife Theatre Film Experience and other family-focused activities. There is a gift shop, Seabird Café and a range of boat trips. The team also undertakes a programme of formal and informal educational activities, as well as conservation-in-action with projects such as SOS Puffin.

The Centre is also in a period of transition, looking to diversify to explore life above and below the waves, through increased education programmes, events and enhanced exhibitions.

Job purpose

As a key member of the Senior Management Team, the Marketing Manager is responsible for managing and developing the profile and image of the Centre, delivering off and online visitor targets; promoting USPs and authenticity of the visitor experience; and being the internal and external brand ambassador.

Key responsibilities

• Research, prepare and deliver the Centre’s marketing and communications plan, featuring local, national and international strands, to engage internal and external stakeholders
• Work effectively with all departments to develop and implement a year-round plan to support Discovery Centre activity; boat operations; café and gift shop; membership; and education sector engagement
• Work closely with the Fundraising Manager, providing the tools to engage with, and report to, funders, donors and trusts, as well as promoting charitable objectives
• Effectively manage the Centre’s marketing budget to maximise engagement with key target audiences and value for money
• Prepare and implement a creative, proactive and innovative public relations strategy targeting online, print and broadcast contacts
• Manage and develop the Centre’s website
• Manage the Centre’s social media platforms aiming to increase online engagement
• Manage and develop the enews strategy, increasing database contacts in line with GDPR regulations
• Produce high quality design collateral including leaflets, promotional items, signage and members’ magazine
• Lead on all campaign and visitor analysis and research
• Manage the Marketing Officer and interns/ work experience
• Manage relationships with all external suppliers, including design and online, PR, branding and research agencies
• Develop and implement an internal comms strategy for staff and volunteers
• Manage and develop relationships with relevant local, regional and national business and tourism groups, proactively contributing to relevant marketing activity
• Attend and represent the Centre at suitable tourism, wildlife, environmental and educational events
• Present and report to the Board of Trustees as required

Skills and experience

• Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
• Minimum of 3 years in a Marketing Manager or senior PR role
• Excellent communication skills
• Proven copywriting experience
• Keen eye for design and detail
• Experience of campaign research, implementation and analysis
• Team/ junior staff, as well as external agency management
• Demonstrable experience of working with press contacts
• Experience of digital/ social media and online platform development
• Experience in tourism or charity marketing preferable, but not essential
• Organised, self-motivated, proactive, innovative and a good team player

£30,000 - £37,000, depending on skills and experience.

37.5 hours per week (flexible working options available).
