Education Support Assistant (Summer School)

o you have a passion for wildlife and conservation and sharing this with the next generation? Would you like to spend an unforgettable summer in a busy, varied and fun environment working with young people from across Scotland? Recruitment for our 2019 Edinburgh Zoo Summer School is now open!

The very popular RZSS Edinburgh Zoo Summer School is back for its 22nd year, and the theme for 2019 will be around the continent of Asia. Our Summer School runs for 4 weeks, commencing the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd of July 2019. Children (aged between 5 – 15 years) will attend a week-long course of animal related activities from 9am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday.

The weekly programme will be repeated for four weeks, with different children attending each week. The programme allows children to take part in a range of fun activities including arts and crafts, animal encounters, games, zoo trails, drama, keeper encounters, music and much more!The programme will be divided in to four classes of up to 25 children, e.g. Primary 2/3, Primary 4/5, Primary 6/7 and Secondary 1– 4. Each week concludes with a performance by the children for their parents, to show-case what they have done and learnt during the week.

What you’ll be doing…
To help ensure our Summer School is a success, we are recruiting for up to two support staff to provide pastoral support for children and practical support for teachers as the team delivers exciting activities over the four-week Summer School Programme. You can expect to help with:

- Supervise breaks and lunchtimes and organising informal games and activities during these times
taking care of children who feel sick/vulnerable and are therefore temporarily unable to take part in class activities
- Providing one-on-one support for children with additional support needs
- Helping to create and distribute resources, and
- Running pre-planned drop-off and wind-down sessions with all age groups

Working hours during the Summer School (1st July to 31st July) are Monday – Thursday (8.15am – 3.45pm) and Friday (8.15am - 4.00pm).

In addition, prior to the Summer School commencing, there will be a mandatory induction and training day Saturday 2nd March 2019 (9am – 5pm) as well as a set-up day on Sunday 30th June 2019.

What you’ll need…
You may already be a teaching assistant and looking for a Summer opportunity with a unique organisation, then this may be the role for you. Although only short-term (one month), this role will have a big impact and we’re looking for Support Assistant with experience in working with children in an educational environment. In addition, a track record of providing first-class care and service, as well as excellent communication and presentation skills goes without staying. If you have a passion for wildlife and conservation, that’s even better – we would like to hear from you. Due to the nature of the role, any offer of employment is subject to satisfactory references, right to work in the UK and PVG check prior to commencement.
