RZSS, Edinburgh Zoo

Would you like to further your horticultural knowledge within a unique environment at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo? We are looking for an experienced gardener to help take care of our green spaces to the highest standard, so that it provides a 5-star visitor experience

This is a rewarding role with one of Scotland’s leading education and conservation charities. You will be working ‘hands-on’ with a team of gardeners to provide a top-class horticultural environment for our visitors. The ideal candidate will take pride in their work, striving to produce the best quality grounds for the Zoo.

What you’ll be doing…
Being a gardener for the society will involve:

. working in unique green spaces, including animal enclosures and public areas
. enhancing your horticultural skills by working with a variety of plant material including; herbaceous plants, trees and shrubs, tropical plants
. undertaking general gardening duties including weeding planting grass cutting/edging hedge cutting and keeping grounds tidy
. operating required tools and machinery and also snow clearance/gritting in the winter months
. supervisory responsibility for grounds persons and placement Students

This is a permanent and full-time role (37.5 hours per week).Please note, this physical hands-on role in a busy zoological park and will involve bending and lifting, lawn maintenance, and uniquely, gardening within animal enclosures and public areas.

What you’ll need…
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate an interest in horticultural together with some horticultural skills and experience – ideally from within a similar environment. If you have the following, we would like to hear from you:

. Able to demonstrate and set a good example of health and safety practice to others
. Relevant SVQ level 2 qualification, or equivalent qualification or experience
. Excellent plant knowledge coupled with the ability for practical application of your horticultural knowledge.
. You will be a positive team player
. A driving licence, training in use of PA1 & PA6 Pesticides, tractor and or forklift training competence and an up-to-date basic knowledge and understanding of basic small plant maintenance are desirable.
