Head of Engagement, Scotland

Application Deadline: Friday 13th September 2019
Reference number: Lzg1A-6
Location: Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen

The Head of Engagement is a new and exciting role that will lead on our 'Saving Nature Through People programme' - creating campaigns and projects that inspire people to save nature across Scotland.

We know that nature is in trouble and one of the biggest threats is where people are disengaged with the habitats and species of the natural world. This role will encourage people to get involved in caring for the environment by educating and enthusing young people through our youth work, by leading and developing our volunteering delivery, by developing an events programme with mass appeal and by creating new partnership projects to engage more people with our cause. The role presents an exciting opportunity to guide our strategy and ensure RSPB Scotland is at the forefront of developing our own initiatives and supporting campaigns such as the Global Earth and Youth Climate strikes.

This leadership role sits within the Fundraising and Communications team reporting to the Head of Fundraising and Communications. You will be responsible for the implementation of the RSPB's strategy in this area, developing team work plans for a team of 6 and providing specialist expertise to operational teams who work with people in communities across Scotland on a daily basis. Successful projects requiring support and next-stage development include Giving Nature a Home in Glasgow & Edinburgh, Dolphinwatch in Aberdeen and Nature Prescriptions in Shetland.

You will work with counterparts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to develop plans to engage and empower people across the UK while understanding the political, social and economic context of Scotland. This area of work also relies on developing partnership working with those in the environmental sector, public bodies, funding partners and developing novel approaches in new partnerships where we have common aims or audiences.

Applications are invited if you can demonstrate the following:

1) Sound knowledge and experience of people engagement and campaigning approaches including those involving young people, volunteers and events.
2) Proven leadership and people management skills.
3) Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present, influence and represent the organisation.
4) Project management skills to plan and develop and manage projects, manage risks, costs, time and project teams
5) Collaboration and influencing skills to build partnerships and manage projects
6) Creativity to identify emerging trends and techniques in engaging people with nature within a country context that will be attractive to funders.

The RSPB is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to the appropriate safeguarding checks upon appointment.

This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be asked to declare unspent convictions and cautions at offer of employment stage.

Salary starting at
£34,643 to £37,530 per annum
