General Manager of Visitor Operations

Eden Scott is delighted to be working with V&A Dundee to recruit a General Manager of Visitor Operations.

V&A Dundee is Scotland’s first design museum with a mission to enrich lives through design. It is an international centre for design, a place of inspiration, discovery and learning.

On 15 September 2018, V&A Dundee officially opened to the public creating a new landmark building for Scotland and the nation’s first design museum. The opening marked the culmination of over 11 years of planning to realise the new museum, contribute to Dundee’s transformation and the engagement of people across Scotland and beyond in design.

V&A Dundee is the first building in the UK designed by Kengo Kuma, the internationally renowned architect who is also designing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium. His vision is for the museum is to be a new ‘living room for the city’, welcoming everyone to visit, enjoy and socialise, and to reconnect the city with its historic River Tay waterfront.

Since opening, the museum has welcomed over 900,000 visitors, significantly exceeding original estimates. Standing at the centre of Dundee’s waterfront transformation, it has been widely recognised for its contribution to the repositioning of the city as a great place to live, visit, study and invest in. V&A Dundee symbolises Dundee’s vision for the future helping change perceptions of the city and achieve global recognition, such as being named in Lonely Planet’s top 10 Best in Europe destinations for 2018, and Time magazine’s World’s 100 Greatest Places of 2019.

The museum has an ambitious vision to provide a world-class experience and tell a global story, investigating the international importance of design, alongside the outstanding achievements of Scotland. The opening programme demonstrated that vision through a vibrant programme which included a public festival, exhibitions, new design commissions and events.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the General Manager of Visitor Operations is responsible for the overall management of the visitor experience and the smooth running of the public areas.

The post-holder will lead on the management and development of all functions within Visitor Operations and in close collaboration with the General Manager of Building Operations and Security. These functions include retail, ticketing, galleries staffing and events management. They will use their considerable expertise to devise and implement systems, practices, polices, and strategies leading to a world class and intuitive visitor experience.

A key focus will be management of the large Visitor Experience team including recruitment, training and coaching along with coordination of all events both internal and commercial including drinks receptions, parties, gala dinner and conferences.

The post-holder will assume duty management responsibilities of the building along with their teams; whilst continuing to manage the team and driving the ongoing development and enhancement of its functions.

Key skills and experience required

Applying candidates should have a CV that details:

Essential
- Minimum 3 years proven experience in a similar role in a large venue or attraction, leading a team to deliver an excellent experience

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of visitor needs, competition and benchmark indicators
- Proven experience of developing and maximizing the effective use of ticketing and retail systems, and of using Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience of managing both a large team, and a large venue, with multiple priorities, coordinating and leading on delivery activity

Desirable
- Previous work in a museum or gallery with good experience and understanding of the requirements of working within a museum and around museum objects
- Knowledge of First Aid and Licensing issues

Due to the duty management responsibilities of the role, it is essential that the successful candidate lives within 30 minutes travel time of the museum.

Excellent salary circa £34,000 - £38,000 dependent on skills and experience is on offer plus various generous company benefits in order to secure the right candidate. Benefits include 38 days holidays.
