Marketing Officer

The Marketing Officer will develop and implement marketing and promotional strategies which will build a strong brand profile for V&A Dundee and drive visits to the museum, exhibitions, events, the café, shop and restaurant supporting income generation. This dynamic, fast-paced role promotes V&A Dundee as a must-see international visitor attraction at an exciting time for the new museum.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Marketing & Audiences Manager to deliver marketing and audience strategies which support the organisation’s cultural, commercial, fundraising and visitor objectives.

  • Create and implement effective multi-channel marketing campaigns to develop audiences and drive visits to exhibitions, events and the online offer.

  • Support the delivery of a broad range of marketing collateral including print, online marketing, direct marketing, sales promotions, partner promotions, e-marketing, social media, and advertising.

  • Work with the Marketing & Audiences Manager to maximise income generation by working with the retail team and catering partners on collaborative marketing and promotion, ensuring this is integrated across V&A Dundee activity.

  • Appoint and manage external designers, consultants, media buyers, creative agencies, research agencies, copywriters and mailing houses to undertake work which supports the department.

  • Work with the Marketing & Audiences Manager to develop and deliver tourism strategies, both internally and with external partners, to position V&A Dundee and the city of Dundee as a compelling visitor destination aligned with city, region and national strategies.

  • Build effective relationships with key partners, keeping contacts updated on new developments, securing promotion of exhibitions and events and converting to visits.

  • Represent V&A Dundee at leading travel trade shows, meetings and networking events, promoting the new museum as a new, world-class ‘must-see’ cultural attraction and venue.

  • Facilitate familiarisation trips to V&A Dundee for travel trade, specialist media, national agencies and international tourism industry.

  • Manage V&A Dundee’s travel trade relationships and work with the Bookings & Enquiries Officer and Visitor Operations to support effective follow-on bookings and visits.

  • Work with the Marketing & Audiences Manager to develop a range of strategic partnerships with leading industry brands including hospitality and accommodation providers, transport providers, online travel agents and review sites.

  • Collaborate with partners across Dundee and the wider region on the development of destination driving activity – contributing to the development of Dundee and the waterfront as a dynamic visitor destination.

  • Support the delivery marketing and tourism events in the museum.

  • Work proactively with internal teams, including Visitor Operations, Programme, Philanthropy & Partnerships staff, and Heritage Portfolio on events, promotions and partnerships.

  • Be available out-of-hours to undertake planned activity on an occasional basis.

  • Any other duties determined to be reasonable for this position.

Person specification

  • Proven understanding of managing a high-profile brand or a large public-facing organisation.At least three years’ hands-on marketing experience

  • Proven experience of developing and implementing successful multi-channel, multi-market campaigns which deliver to organisational objectives.

  • Ability to proactively manage expectations of senior internal and external senior stakeholders in terms of responsibilities, resources, outputs and outcomes.

  • Communicates with credibility and authority presenting a compelling point of view.

  • Influences and persuades stakeholders with the ability to gain commitment of others to achieve audience outcomes.

  • Self-motivated, proactive and willingness to ‘go the extra mile’.

  • Relevant degree or post-graduate qualification or equivalent significant experience.


  • Knowledge of the cultural, creative, tourism or education sectors.

  • Understanding of the tourism eco-system, trends and opportunities.

  • Knowledge of communicating to specialist audiences in learning or business environments.

  • Experience of relationship-building and B2B sales and promotion.
