National Museums Scotland

Head of Exhibitions and Design

Application Deadline: Monday 28th September 2020
National Museums Scotland is one of the leading museum groups in Europe. With one of the largest and most diverse collections in the world, we are responsible for the acquisition, preservation and display of a substantial part of Scotland’s cultural, historic and national heritage.

Millions of local and international visitors enjoy our four museums each year, and we also introduce our collections to a much wider audience than can physically visit our museums through, touring exhibitions, loans, community engagement, digital programmes and research.

Over the last decade, we have invested over £120 million in our sites and have more than doubled our visitor numbers, with over 3 million people now visiting our four museums. Alongside this, we have continued to transform how we communicate and engage with our audiences. 2019 has seen the completion of our Masterplan for the National Museum of Scotland with the opening of three new galleries dedicated to Ancient Egypt, East Asia and the Art of Ceramics.

Due to a recent change in our organisation structure, we are pleased to be bringing to the market this new senior role which is a part of National Museums Scotland’s Leadership team.

The role provides vision and leadership for the exhibitions programme, permanent display projects, gallery maintenance and all design and technical projects across National Museums Scotland, all of which aim to engage visitors and audiences with objects and stories from the national collections. Amongst a wide range of priorities, you will have responsibility for the development, planning and delivery of a strategically driven, engaging and coordinated programme of world class gallery renewals and exhibitions.

With a degree or equivalent in a related subject, you will have significant experience of managing high profile exhibition and permanent display projects in a museum, visitor attraction or heritage attraction environment. This should include experience of compiling and effectively managing significant operational and project budgets.

You will also have a strong working knowledge of audience needs and expectations in exhibitions and permanent displays and be an authority on current practice in exhibitions, displays and interpretive design in the museum sector.

A collaborative management style is essential together with the skills to develop good working relationships with colleagues and external contacts. We also require proven experience of thinking creatively and imaginatively about public programming.
