Job Description – Church Beadle

1 Background

Greyfriars Kirk’s (GK) roots go back to 1620, and the site was a place of worship well before then. Today GK is a member of The Church of Scotland, and it has a small and committed congregation. The roll is about 250 and about 60 attend the main service on Sunday. GK hosts other services on Sundays as well as mid-week prayers on Thursday lunchtime. GK is a unique and special venue for special services such as weddings, funerals and memorials. GK is also hired for a variety of non-religious events such as concerts, exhibitions, conferences ceilidh’s, receptions and informal social functions. GK welcomes over 120,000 visitors throughout the year – (February to December).

2 Role Purpose

The key responsibility is to offer a supportive service to the Ministry Team to facilitate all practical aspects of services of worship in a respectful and dignified way. The Ministry Team includes the Minister and other members of the Faith and Action Team. You will be required to attend Kirk’s core Sunday Services when on duty: weekly at 10:30am to 11:30am, and 12:30pm to 1:30pm for the Gaelic Service and monthly at 9:30am of communion. You will also be required to attend (where possible) funerals, weddings and other services (including rehearsals) in the Kirk and will be paid an additional fee to do so. You will offer a sensitive supportive and welcoming service to all who attend.

Duties
· Attend core services of worship.
· Ensure that the ministry and duty volunteer/staff teams are fully supported.
· Ensure the Kirk is set up in accordance with the Sunday Service.
· Prepare services for communion including linen and communion ware.
· Switching on and testing audio and visual aid equipment in advance of the

Services.
· Conducting sound checks with those participating in the Service in advance and operating the audio system during Services.
· Supporting the volunteer Tech Team with the streaming of Services.
· Perform detailed tasks for services as per instructed.
· Ensure there is sufficient stock (bread) for the sacrament for communion series.
· Act as Duty Manager and responsible keyholder.
· Manage vehicle access and car parking in accordance with Kirk’s policy.
· Work with the Operations team to manage linen supplies and laundry.
· Ensure the safe-keeping and security of communion ware.
· Liaise with Elders concerning access to the safe for any collections.

3 Expected outcomes for the role by which performance can be measured

· A high level of satisfaction from the congregation, visitors, volunteers and users of the Kirk premises.
· Safe and secure environment when acting as a keyholder.
· Efficient use of resources and facilities including heating and lighting.
· Adequate stock of pulpit supplies.

4 Terms and Conditions

Location: Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh
Reports to: Operations Manager
Salary: £3,650.00 per annum.
Salary plus annual leave equates to 52 services per year. Additional services and occasional additional work for special services such as weddings and funerals will be paid at the rate of £16.25 per hour.
Annual Leave: 6 Sundays per year (excluding Christmas and Easter)
Hours: As required at core services.
