You will be working for a member organisation that is highly-respected in the tourism industry and whose members are the best trained and qualified tourist guides in Scotland.
Joining a small core team comprising the Association Manager and two Administrators, you will be based in our office in Stirling with a mix of in-office and home working.
About the Scottish Tourist Guides Association (STGA – www.stga.co.uk)
Founded over 60 years ago, the STGA is both a member organisation and accreditation body for professional tourist guides in Scotland. We provide training and accreditation for those seeking to become professional tourist guides and have over 500 members who provide a wide range of guiding services to tour operators, agents and private clients. We pride ourselves on providing Scotland’s tourism industry with the highest quality of guides, trained to professional Standards of Performance, examined both throughout and at the end of their courses, and bound by a professional Code of Conduct. Once trained and qualified, guides can join the STGA and are entitled to wear the coveted STGA Blue Badge or Green Badge as appropriate. Although self-employed, members benefit from being featured on our website and having full professional insurance cover, opportunities for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and support from our office team.
About our training
There are two strands to our training: Guide Training and Train the Trainer.
We have a small training team comprising interested and experienced members of the STGA who are trained to help deliver our Guide Training Courses and assess the students.
The Training Manager is responsible for:
● the Train the Trainer programmes
● allocating trainer roles e.g. coordinating training days, mentoring or assessing students
● overseeing Guide Training courses and the day-to-day work of the Course Director
● organising the Final Examinations for students
● managing the training budget
● representing the STGA on training matters
About our Guide Training courses
Our main training course is the Blue Badge course, which runs on a part-time basis over a period of 20 months, starting every second August. A Course Director is appointed to manage the delivery of this course, which is overseen by the Blue Badge Committee, the Chair of which is a member of the STGA Board.
We also run Green Badge courses for guides in Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles. These are delivered by local STGA trainers with mainland trainers involved in the final examination.
Yellow Badge and Guiding is Fun (GIF) courses are run occasionally for external bodies.
