As a key support to the Facilities Manager and Senior Maintenance Assistant, the Maintenance Assistant will engage in a range of tasks connected with the maintenance and upkeep of the site. Allowing the smooth running of the visitor attraction.

INFORMATION ABOUT TEAM

You will form part of the Facilities Team, lead by the Facilities Manager. The small dedicated maintenance and landscape team is made up of four, who work to ensure the maintenance tasks, planned and unplanned are carried out on the site.

SCOPE OF DUTIES

• Undertaking day-to-day maintenance within the Almond Valley Heritage Trust Site to the high standard expected by the Trust, including but not limited to:

Context
Abbotsford was designed and built by world famous author Sir Walter Scott as both his home and the location for his extensive collection of books and historical memorabilia. It was first opened to the public in 1833, five months after his death. After the death of his last descendent in residence in 2004, The Abbotsford Trust was created to preserve, protect, and promote the house, and the life and works of Sir Walter, and inspire, inform and engage audiences. Abbotsford is considered to be one of the most important heritage sites in Scotland.

In 2013, Abbotsford re-opened to the public following a £11.24 million restoration project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Scottish Government, Scottish Borders Council, Historic Scotland, and Scottish Enterprise along with a large number of major donors. From 2022 the fundraising function at Abbotsford moved into a new and exciting phase to raise money to achieve Abbotsford’s charitable objectives for a range of cultural and capital projects as well as an endowment fund. Fundraising focuses on the following: major donors, trusts & foundations, legacies, and individual giving (including both Friends of Abbotsford and a patron level membership programmes). The Senior Development Officer is a key role within the small but mighty development team which also consists of the Development Manager and the Development Officer.

Job Purpose
• Responsible for maximising fundraised income for Abbotsford through: individual giving and campaigns, regular giving including through membership, and legacies. Stewardship of donors.
• Responsible for maximising income through all fundraising ‘marketing’ routes including digital channels, print and events.
• Responsible for maximising fundraised income on-site.

Scope and Accountability
The Senior Development Officer reports directly to the Development Manager and is responsible for achieving certain elements within the Development Plan:
• Maximising fundraised income through the following channels: individual giving and campaigns, annual giving including through membership, as well as legacy giving.
• Income through fundraising ‘marketing’ including digital channels and on site.
• Managing events in support of the above channels, as well as supporting the Development Manager with major donor event, including achieving the appropriate return on investment.
• Ensuring compliance with all appropriate legislation within the post’s key areas of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

 Developing individual giving and campaigns as income streams for Abbotsford, both one-off donations and regular giving.

 Developing annual giving through membership particularly with mid-level givers to maximise income.

 Developing legacy giving pledges as a future income stream and managing any legacy gifts.

 Managing all ‘marketing’ aspects of fundraising to maximise income for the Trust through all fundraising channels.

People Management – Responsibilities

 Act as a volunteer supervisor as and when required.

 Build and maintain good working relationships with colleagues within the Development team and within the wider organisation.

 Build and maintain good relationships with donors and especially with Scott’s Abbotsford Circle members.

Systems and Processes – Responsibilities

Individual Giving and Campaigns
• Responsible for developing the individual giving opportunity, making use of direct mail and online channels where appropriate (e.g. Adopt-a-Book; in memory benches, etc). Manage the donor journey, working with colleagues, to maximise income.

• Set up and manage campaigns, working with the relevant manager, to maximise income to the Trust.

• Supporter newsletter: act as editor of the supporter newsletter, as both a stewardship and income generation tool.

• Social media, website and all digital aspects of fundraising: responsible for maximising fundraised income and stewardship through these channels.

• Plan to build regular income streams through repeat gifts via direct debit and through membership.

• Investigate other opportunities such as but not limited to: lotteries, raffles, give as you spend, crowdfunding.

Annual Giving through Membership

• Scott’s Abbotsford Circle: Maximise new membership and repeat membership through stewardship from mid-level donors, working with the Development Manager regarding any major donor members as appropriate:
• Plan the annual events programme and organise all events for members
• Manage the supporter journey and all communications with the support of the Development Officer
• Friends of Abbotsford: Work with the Development Officer to maximise new membership and repeat membership through stewardship as well as fundraising by Friends.

Legacy Giving
• Manage all aspects of legacy giving, including campaigns, to build this new stream of fundraising including stewarding legacy pledgers.
• Managing any legacy gifts working with the Finance team.

Event Organisation
• Manage all fundraising and stewardship events, working with other members of the Development team as relevant, e.g. Circle events. Work with the Development Manager on major donor events.
Maximise Fundraised Income On Site and On Line
• Maximise fundraised income opportunities, including campaigns, through all aspects of Abbotsford’s marketing including the website, social media, online donations, ticket sales.
• Onsite fundraising at Abbotsford: responsible for maximising income, both for campaigns and unrestricted.

Other Responsibilities

 Ensure that the fundraising CRM is up to date regarding all fundraising aspects of the post’s role, working with the Development Officer.

 Monitor the effectiveness and return on investment of all initiatives for which the post is responsible.

 Act as a weekend Duty Manager on a rota basis – estimated at one day a month with time off in lieu.

The house, garden and landscape of Abbotsford are the creation of Sir Walter Scott and were developed between 1811 and 1825. Scott is justly famed worldwide as Scotland’s most successful and prolific author, but his surmounting interest was the designing of his 1300 acre estate and garden. It is categorized as having ‘Outstanding Significance’ by Historic Scotland.

A major £12 million capital campaign resulted in restoring the house in 2013 and creating a much improved visitor experience with a new car park, visitor centre, play trail and interpretation. The upgrading and improvement of the gardens is now the focus of the Trustees plans.

Scope and Accountability

The Gardening Team comprises the Head Gardener, assistant gardeners working together with volunteers, students, groups and local employability agency clients.

The Senior Gardener will work under the supervision of the Head Gardener helping to plan and carry out work programmes. JOB PURPOSE
The post of Ranger for Mingulay, Pabbay & Berneray is key to delivering our conservation, access and engagement goals for the property. The job is to ensure the safe running of the property on a day-to-day basis and contribute to the property’s overall conservation and development and its enjoyment by visitors and supporters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Collect, manage and collate biological information in a consistent manner compatible with Trust and national datasets, and to enable effective reporting to NatureScot
• Undertake and oversee basic maintenance to buildings
• Maintain the solar panel system, internet system, water and sewage provision
• Contribute to and deliver a robust biosecurity policy to ensure no invasive non-native species are introduced.

JOB PURPOSE

The Seasonal Rangers will be the face of the National Trust for Scotland in Staffa during the busy summer months. The Seasonal Ranger will welcome visitors and help ensure their time on Staffa is highly enjoyable and memorable, while at the same time helping to protect and enhance the island’s natural and cultural heritage. They will play a critical role in forging a strong and close working relationship with Day Boat Operators.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Visitor Services
• Welcoming and engaging visitors, enhancing their experience by providing information about Staffa and the Treshnish Islands, the geological, natural, built and cultural heritage, including strong messages around safety and respect for wildlife.
• Encourage people to further contribute to caring for Staffa through donating or taking up membership of NTS.
• Collect donations made on the island and securely transfer them to the full-time Ranger or Property Manager for receipting and banking.
• Assist with practical countryside management including safety checks of visitor infrastructure, litter picks, beach cleans and maintenance.
• Lead and assist with events such as guided walks and talks as appropriate.

Nature conservation
• Contribute to National Trust for Scotland biological monitoring programmes including seabird surveys and regular biosecurity checks.
• Manage and collate biological information in a consistent manner compatible with Trust and national datasets.

Community engagement
• Build strong working relationships with Day Boat Operators, their crew members, and other local stakeholders to support consistent messaging to visitors.

Marketing & Communications
• Enthusiastically promote awareness and understanding of the role that NTS plays in protecting and caring for Staffa, Lunga, the Treshnish islands and wider work across Scotland.
• Regularly update and contribute positive stories to NTS social media and other communication outlets relevant to Staffa and Lunga.

The Monument Conservation Unit based in the Doune Depot has the responsibility for conservation, maintenance and presentation works at Doune Castle, Inchmahome Priory, Dunblane Cathedral and Cambuskenneth Abbey among others. You will be expected to carry out site based maintenance works at the above monuments, and others within the Central Region. A vehicle will be provided for your use, therefore a driving licence is essential.

*Working hours
The normal weekly hours of work will vary according to the working season in the working year. The working year will cover the calendar year 1 April to 31 March.

Currently the working year is divided into 2 working seasons namely a longer working hours season (summer) and a shorter working hours season (winter). The length of each working season will be fixed by local management after discussion with the Monument Conservation Units and not later than 1 April of that working year.

• Carry out conservation painting and decoration using traditional techniques and materials.
• Carry out painter work on refurbishment/maintenance projects.
• Undertake painting works, including limewashing, to a high standard of finish to ensure all buildings in the Central Region are maintained/presented to the highest standard.
• Winter works may include bench maintenance and refreshing monument signage.

Scottish Canals are responsible for the management and development of five Scottish canals; we care for bridges, buildings, locks, The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies and 19 water supply reservoirs in locations across Scotland.  We are currently seeking cheerful, positive, active and outgoing Seasonal Canal Workers to join our team on the Forth & Clyde Canal and Union Canal based at:

Broxburn – Union Canal. Main duties include assisting with grounds maintenance, general maintenance and supporting water control.

The Falkirk Wheel – Union Canal. Main duties include assisting with moving boats through the Falkirk Wheel and Locks 1 to 3 on the Union Canal, grounds maintenance and general maintenance.

Grangemouth – Forth & Clyde Canal. Main duties include assisting with moving boats through sealocks, operating mechanical bridges, grounds maintenance, general maintenance and supporting water control.

Glasgow – Forth & Clyde Canal. Main duties include assisting with moving boats through Locks 21 to 37, operating mechanical bridges, grounds maintenance, general maintenance and supporting water control.

As well as this, you will take responsibility for the surrounding area including grass cutting, litter picking and some minor DIY and maintenance such as painting and weeding.

Providing safe passage for vessels by operating locks and bridges.
Operating mowers, strimmer’s and other ground care equipment to carry out routine vegetation management.

Fault finding, repair and renewal of light industrial distribution systems and switch gear, maintenance of public area small power and lighting in support of the visitor services and retail operations and small projects when required.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the world’s top four botanic gardens based on the quality, breadth and depth of our science, plant collections, public engagement, and education and we are looking for a Maintenance Manager to join our Estates & Technology team.

You will be responsible for the delivery of the RBGE Estates maintenance program across the built environment in our four Gardens (Edinburgh, Dawyck, Logan and Benmore), including maintenance works undertaken by our in-house estates’ maintenance team and our external Hard FM service provider.

Applicants should have either a trade qualification in a discipline such as mechanical, electrical, C&I or equivalent, relevant practical work experience.
