Working as one of four Heads of Region, you will lead a multi- disciplinary team of professionals and be responsible for the operational management and care of the historical sites within your Region. You’ll operate as a representative for all HES

You will be a key member of the Monument Conservation Unit, supporting HES in fulfilling its duties to increase the knowledge and understanding of the historic environment. Working alongside two full time Gardeners you will be responsible for the upkeep of the gardens and the grounds around the Castle as well as assisting at our other properties in care including the Argyll’s Lodging, King’s Knot and Stirling Old Bridge.

Context
Abbotsford was designed and built by Sir Walter Scott as both his home and the location for his extensive collection of books and historical memorabilia, and was first opened to the public in 1833, five months after his death. After the death of his last descendent in residence, Dame Jean Maxwell-Scott, in 2004, The Abbotsford Trust was created to preserve, protect, and promote not only the house, but also the life and works of Sir Walter. Abbotsford is considered to be one of the most important heritage sites in Scotland.

The Visitor Centre welcomes some 94,000 people through its doors every year, the majority of whom will come to the café during their visit. Open 10am to 5pm in high season, and 10am to 4pm in low season, Ochiltree’s Café and its outdoor Horsebox serve tourists, coach groups, local residents and dog walkers of all ages year-round. The café at Abbotsford came in-house in 2023, having previously been contracted out to a management company. Catering services for private events and the 5 star luxury self catering Hope Scott Wing is provided by external caterers, who on occasion may require limited use of kitchen facilities.

Job Purpose
• Responsible for achieving the commercial and service objectives for catering at Abbotsford
• Responsible for achieving financial targets monitored via key performance indicators including total sales, gross profit on sales, and full cost management in all areas
• The management of all functions of the café catering operation at Abbotsford including management of staff, resources, business development, customer satisfaction and quality standards

Scope and Accountability
The Catering Manager reports directly to the Commercial Manager and is responsible for achieving the objectives of the catering plan. They are responsible for the following resources:

About the role

We have a vitally important and rare opportunity for an experienced security professional to join us. Working in our four beautiful, listed buildings based in the heart of Edinburgh and looking after our amazing world-class art collection this is no ordinary job.

The Head of Security is a wide-ranging role working across all levels of the organisation including the Leadership Team. You will be responsible for developing, and implementing policies and procedures to keep people, art, and our buildings safe and secure. You’ll be comfortable in a senior position, either moving from a similar post or looking to advance your career.

As a passionate security advocate, you must have exceptional knowledge and solid experience of the management of security services, preferably in a public setting (e.g. gained in a gallery/museum or visitor attraction, retail, or hospitality).

Reporting to the Director of Operations you will have direct line management of five Security Supervisors who provide 24-hour security cover for our galleries. You will work closely with the Health and Safety Advisor, and four Operations Managers. You will share the 24 hour on-call responsibility with the Director of Operations.

Your responsibilities will be varied. Each day will be different, with new challenges that push your capabilities and enable you to learn new things. Duties will include:

– Ensuring the safety and security of all staff, visitors and contractors in line with our strategic aims, standards, and relevant legislation.

– Advising, developing, and implementing appropriate strategies, policies and measures, balancing resource requirements with acceptable risk, to ensure the maximum protection and security of our world class collection, our buildings and other assets.

As our Reservations and Relationship Executive you will deliver high quality guest service as you answer all booking enquiries and act as a key client contact during all pre-event/ workshop communications.

Using your networking and communication skills you will strengthen ties with local businesses, manage relationships with the travel trade, and engage with coaches for market insights and encourage repeat business. This role also involves active participation in networking events, making active sales calls and contributing creative skills to assist marketing in generating content.

We are looking for someone that is passionate about enhancing the centre’s local presence and achieving strategic objectives through effective relationship-building and creative collaboration.

You will be confident in preparing reports and invoices from a sales system. Sales and customer relationship experience is desirable.

OI PEASANTS! WE’RE RECRUITING… Fancy leading an attraction and being responsible for outrageous behaviour in order to create an inhospitable and gruesome environment?

Working here feels pretty unique, but also cold, dark and foul-smelling! Therefore, we’re looking for someone who is highly motivated and dynamic to work in this distinctively thrilling attraction that will take you back to Edinburgh’s darkest history.

In this full-time permanent role, you’ll report to the Regional Director for the UK & Ireland. The key aim of this role is to deliver the financial targets for the attraction whilst maintaining the brand standards of presentation and operation daily. You will work with our mischievous marketing team to create and execute a marketing strategy which drives visitor volume to the Dungeon. Critical to this role will be your ability to lead and motivate the team to ensure excellent standards of guest service, presentation, and maintenance.

Key responsibilities for this role, apart from causing outrage, will include producing and working to a business plan across the year which is designed to ensure delivery of annual profit targets. You will be responsible for financial planning and forecasting of revenue streams; implementing strategies in commercial areas including retail, photography and events and working closely with the brand and attraction marketing teams (did we say mischievous?) to support and drive these functions.

Qualifications & Experience

You’ll have a flair for networking, communicating, and building strong, lasting relationships across the business.
Have significant management experience at a senior level in a complex, multi-functional commercial business, preferably in the attraction/tourism field.
Possess excellent commercial and financial acumen as well as a real creative and unique flair.
Have excellent communication and motivational skills, a real passion for this business and the ability to manage relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders.
Experience in ensuring safety is paramount and managing operational budgets and reviewing and updating operational procedures.
